European UNION CITIZENSEuropean Union citizens who want to settle in Spain, as of 2007, no longer need residence cards. In its place, they are issued a Certificate of Registration, along with a NIE, Spanish tax identification number. Tmy must still be obtained from a police station's foreigners department but a new system of appointments made by telephone makes it all much easier. As European pensioner I ought to obtain Form E-121 from my own country, which will enable me to transfer my rights for health care and medicines to the Spanish Social Security medical system. It must be obtained in home country. In the UK, they are available from the post office. If I am an European citizen merely visiting Spain, I should obtain the European Health Insurance Card, which entitles European citizens to emergency health care in another European country. As European citizen intending to work or start a business in Spain I can just arrive to Spain and begin my paperwork immediately; I can apply for employment at the National Employment Service INEM under the same conditions as Spaniards. When I get a job, I will pay to the Spanish Social Security system in return for medical care and an eventual pension. Those intending to start a business will face a labyrinth of permits and licenses, just as Spaniards themselves do, but it can all be overcome. The "C" brochure, booklet number Leaflet C16 in the UK, from the Spanish consulate explains many details about moving to Spain; explains about importing my household goods, and gives information about driving licences, for example. It also lists requirements for obtaining the residence visa, which is necessary for non-European citizens intending to reside in Spain. Consulates have much information available in addition to that contained in leaflet C16. The Spanish government produces many publications to inform visitors and investors. Duties on importation of household goods have disappeared with free circulation of goods within the European for European Union citizens. | |||||||||
